History

Built in 1985, on the foundations of the former School of Music, this is one of the founding schools of the Porto Polytechnic. Today it features three departments: music, theatre and image arts.

Visa Requirements

For study a course longer than three months:
Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: Student visa required. You will also need a residence permit.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: Student visa not required, but you will have to register your stay with the local authorities.

For a study course shorter than three months:

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: A student visa is required only for nationalities who typically need a Portugal Schengen Visa. People from many countries, such as the US., Australia, Canada, can enter Portugal with just their passport for up to three months, during which time they can even take a short study course.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: Student visa not required.

The Student Association of the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (AEESMAE) is the representative organisation of ESMAE students. 

Facilities

-The Helena Sá e Costa Theater (THSC) is a structure integrated into the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo. The THSC’s strategy is to present new creations and creators, host external productions, particularly within the new languages of performing arts and multimedia, and host ESMAE productions in the areas of music and theatre.

-Café-Concert Francisco Beja In addition to operating as a School Canteen, Café-Concerto Francisco Beja has expertise in the areas of music and audiovisual. The gallery, surrounding the entire room on a higher level, functions as an exhibition space: small performance and theatre shows, jazz concerts, chamber and contemporary music, small orchestras and other types of musical groups.

-PORTO goes beyond the borders of its campuses, guaranteeing modern infrastructure and equipment. It has a theatre, orchestras, publishing houses and a museum.

-riZoma – Intervention and Research Platform for Musical Creation. A network formed by a wide range of active Portuguese entities linked to creation, education, interpretation and research, with extensive experience in the context of contemporary classical music.

-Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen The AEC is a European cultural and educational network that brings together around 300 institutions linked to music teaching in 57 countries.

-European League of Institutes of the Arts With 300 members in 47 countries, ELIA brings together arts education institutions representing 300,000 students from all artistic areas.

-European Network of Opera Academies ENOA has 13 members and 18 associated institutions from 17 European countries, constituting a network of cultural institutions – academies, opera producers, foundations and festivals – working together to provide training for new artists and promote their mobility, while simultaneously encouraging the creation and public presentation of new operas throughout Europe.

-European Opera Academy Specialising in musical theatre and opera, EOA is, at the same time, a school dedicated to singing and opera and an association of schools, promoting the international mobility of its students and providing a variety of training experiences.

Cost of Student Living: 500-800 euros per month with breakdown:

Student halls of residence: between 150 – 250 euros

Rent a studio/one-room apartment: 200 – 800 euros.

Rent a room in a shared apartment: 100 – 550 euros.
